When talking about addiction, most people automatically think drugs and alcohol. While drug and alcohol addictions are a serious issue, there are other types of addiction that can cause just as much trouble and heartache. Gambling is one of these addictions and it is a serious addiction.
Many people enjoy gambling for fun. They bet their money on races or sports. They spend a few dollars in a casino. These people are not compulsive gamblers. Compulsive gamblers do not know when to stop. They do not enjoy the gambling anymore. No longer do they place small bets for the fun of it. No longer do they spend a little money in a casino and walk away with a smile, win or lose. Gamblers with an addiction are addicted to the high that comes with winning.
When compulsive gamblers do not win and do not achieve that high, they become distressed. They spend more and more money, even borrowing if they have to, to try to win and get that fix. Many compulsive gamblers end up penniless because they spent all of their money on gambling. These gamblers will also spend back their winnings, trying to win even more.
The problem with gambling is that lucky streaks run out. A person can be up for a long time. Then, they will crash and burn. Compulsive gamblers, unlike other people, do not know when to walk away. They need to win, it is an addiction, and they have to have it, just like a drug. There is a light at the end of the tunnel for compulsive gamblers. It is called rehab.
Rehab is not just for drug and alcohol addicts. Gamblers can find the help they need to break free of their addiction in rehab. Getting help for a gambling problem is the first step to recovery. Without help, compulsive gamblers will keep on betting until they bet themselves into the poor house.
